Canadian Operators Switch to WCDMA - Plan LTE Rollout

New Canadian Operator Expected to Launch in H2 2009

Globalive Communications, one of the winners in Canada's recent radio spectrum auction says that it expects to launch its new network in the second half of next year. The company paid CA$442 million for licenses which would cover the entire country - except Quebec.  more

Rogers Wireless and TELUS Mobility Q3 2007 Results

First and third placed Canadian mobile operators, Rogers Wireless and TELUS Mobility, both recorded their best net additions of the year so far in Q3 2007, as is traditionally the case in this seasonally-affected market. TELUS came in very slightly short of what it achieved in the third quarter last year, with 135k net new connections, against 137k 12 months earlier. Rogers did 20% better than it managed last year, with 243k net additions (up from 203k), almost exceeding the recent records set in Q3 2005 and Q4 2006 when it registered 244k new customers.  more

Canada's Rogers keeps gap with Bell to over 1m, as Telus closes up

Canadian market leader Rogers Wireless has maintained its lead over Bell Mobility at over 1m customers, despite being outperformed by its arch-rival in terms of proportionate growth for the first time in five quarters. Quarter on quarter growth at Rogers fell to an all-time low of just 0.7% in Q2 2007 whilst Bell Mobility recovered from its first ever negative quarter in Q1 2007 to post growth of 1.1%. This reduced Rogers' lead over Bell from 1.043m to 1.028m customers, as it moved onto a total of 6.91m to Bell's 5.88m. As the market leader has opened up its lead over Bell over the last couple of years, so third placed TELUS Mobility has closed down the gap on its nearest rival. TELUS trumped both companies with net additions of 128k in Q2 2007 - more than both Rogers and Bell put together - closing the margin between itself and Bell to 612k and taking 30% out of the advantage held by the larger company a year earlier. more

Canada Q3 2006 Market Update

Canadian mobile customers grew 10.9% in the 12 months to 30th September 2006 to reach 17.98m at the end of the period, taking penetration in the market to 54.2%, compared to 49.3% at the end of Q3 last year. GSM was the fastest growing technology with a 23% uplift in customer numbers year on year thanks to its sole Canadian exponent, Rogers. more

Telus tops research study

Canada's Telus Mobility says that it has earned top spot in a ranking of North America's wireless carriers by N. Moore Capital, Ltd., an independent New York company providing financial analysis of the telecommunications industry. It's the third consecutive quarter Telus Mobility has ranked first. more

Canadian spectrum auction finishes

The Canadian spectrum auction finished yesterday, raising US$1.48 for the government. Rogers Wireless paid a total of US$393.5-million for 23 new licenses, and Bell Mobility paid the most with a total of $720.5-million for 20 licenses. Telus Communications also won one of the Southern Ontario licenses and was the third-highest bidder over all, spending nearly US$356-million for five new licenses in Eastern Canada. The two remaining bidders were the Montreal-based, W2N which purchased three licenses for US$11.4-million and Thunder Bay Telephone, which bought just one for US$600,000. Microcell, the country's GSM network withdrew early in the auction, as did the USA based Sprint. " more
