Canada's Fido Launches HSPA Service
The Canadian GSM operator, Fido has announced that its HSPA network is now available to customers in 25 markets from Quebec City to Victoria. The Fido 3G high-speed experience suite of services includes mobile and multimedia features such as wireless video calling, streaming video-on-demand, over 25 channels of mobile television and streaming radio-on-demand, including popular XM Satellite radio stations. more

Rogers Wireless and TELUS Mobility Q3 2007 Results
First and third placed Canadian mobile operators, Rogers Wireless and TELUS Mobility, both recorded their best net additions of the year so far in Q3 2007, as is traditionally the case in this seasonally-affected market. TELUS came in very slightly short of what it achieved in the third quarter last year, with 135k net new connections, against 137k 12 months earlier. Rogers did 20% better than it managed last year, with 243k net additions (up from 203k), almost exceeding the recent records set in Q3 2005 and Q4 2006 when it registered 244k new customers. more

Rogers Wireless Testing HSPA Upgrade
Canada's Rogers Wireless is currently running trials of an enhancement to its recently launched HSPA network - to increase download speeds to 7.2 Mbps. Rogers will have spent approximately CA$500 million (US$517 million) over the past two years upgrading its network to support HSPA services. more

Canada's Rogers keeps gap with Bell to over 1m, as Telus closes up
Canadian market leader Rogers Wireless has maintained its lead over Bell Mobility at over 1m customers, despite being outperformed by its arch-rival in terms of proportionate growth for the first time in five quarters. Quarter on quarter growth at Rogers fell to an all-time low of just 0.7% in Q2 2007 whilst Bell Mobility recovered from its first ever negative quarter in Q1 2007 to post growth of 1.1%. This reduced Rogers' lead over Bell from 1.043m to 1.028m customers, as it moved onto a total of 6.91m to Bell's 5.88m. As the market leader has opened up its lead over Bell over the last couple of years, so third placed TELUS Mobility has closed down the gap on its nearest rival. TELUS trumped both companies with net additions of 128k in Q2 2007 - more than both Rogers and Bell put together - closing the margin between itself and Bell to 612k and taking 30% out of the advantage held by the larger company a year earlier. more

Nokia Handset Designed for the Blind
Canada's Rogers Wireless has announced the launch of a specially modified Nokia handset which is aimed at customers with vision loss. The Nokia 6682RVI, equipped with Nuance TALKS software from Nuance Communications essentially turns the Nokia 6682RVI handset into a "talking phone" by converting menus, instructions and content displayed on the screen into audio output through its internal speaker, or an optional wired or Bluetooth headset. more

Rogers Wireless Prepares for TDMA Network Switch-Off
Canada's Rogers Wireless has announced that nearly 200,000 former TDMA/analogue customers have already made the switch to GSM in advance of the May 31st shutdown of the old network. On January 10, 2007, Rogers announced that it would be turning down its older TDMA and analogue networks effective May 31, 2007 and move the remaining customers on these older networks onto its GSM network. more

Debt Agency Confident Canadian Telcos Can Maintain Ratings
In a new study - the debt ratings agency, DBRS says that despite the evolving dynamics of the communications sector, the Canadian telcos still have the ability to maintain their ratings which currently span the BBB and "A" rating ranges. Of the seven telcos covered in the study, Bell Canada (Bell, rated "A") and Rogers Wireless (Rogers Wireless, rated BBB (low)) represent the bookends of the industry. more

In the final quarter of 2006 Manitoba's regional telecom operator Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS) posted almost exactly the same number of net additions as it did in the equivalent quarter of 2005, at 12,001 to the previous year's 12,078. As in 2005 (and indeed every year this century) the Christmas quarter performance was the strongest of the year. The fourth quarter result took MTS' total base to 0.355m and annual net additions for the year 2006 to 37,706 - a new high, beating the previous record set in 2001 by just 399 customers. To add to this is the fact that these customers also spent more on average in Q4 2006 than ever before - Can$56.65 each per month, up more than 50c on the same quarter in 2005. more
