Canada Q1 2009 - Even more sluggish than usual
Canadian mobile penetration continued to languish below 65% in the first quarter of 2009, with an end-quarter rate of 64.6%. This was up 4.0pp year on year but just 0.4pp in the quarter. As this suggests, Q1 09 saw less than impressive growth, with just 176.6k net additions. This was only the third quarter in the past 10 years to see sub-200k growth. Given that this poor performance comes on the back of the first Q4 since 1990 not to record the peak growth of the year, the Canadian market seems to have been hit harder than most by the global economic downturn. more

Rogers 1st-Quarter Revenues Up but Profits Down
Canada's rogers Wireless has reported a rise of 5% in first-quarter revenues to CA$2.75 billion (US$2.25 billion), but a slight dip of 2% in net profits to CA$256 million (US$210 million). Wireless network revenue grew by 8% year-over-year driven by postpaid net subscriber additions of 104,000, data revenue growth accelerating by 43% to 20% of network revenue, and a further reduction of postpaid churn to 1.09%. more

FMC and femtocell equipment markets poised to take off in face of downturn
Market research firm Infonetics Research has released a report on FMC and Femtocell Equipment, which forecasts that combined, sales of FMC network element equipment and femtocell equipment are expected to grow at a healthy rate through the economic downturn and really take off in 2011, reaching nearly $8 billion worldwide by 2013. more
