Mobile content grows on social networks, but ringback tones, music still top demand
The past year has seen a steady rise in the consumption of [mobile] premium content on social networks and communities, as well as other new applications such as location-based services and mobile advertising. Consumer Spending on Mobile Music Will Surpass US$32 billion by 2010
The amount of money that mobile phone users worldwide spend on music received on mobile handsets will reach US$32.2 billion by 2010, up from US$13.7 billion in 2007, according to new global forecasts from Gartner. This is despite competition from various digital music players and a host of challenges faced by telecommunications carriers in delivering these services. more

Nielsen Mobile Adds Sprint Nextel as Data Provider
Nielsen Mobile has announced an agreement to use Sprint Nextel weekly ringtones and full-length over-the-air song download sales data for Nielsen Mobile's point of sales tracking services. In addition, the agreement will also include sales data from Boost Mobile, the lifestyle-based telecommunications subsidiary of Sprint Nextel that distributes wireless communications products for the youth market. Nielsen Mobile compiles data from wireless carriers, aggregators and other mobile entertainment retailers. more

Ringback tones popular in Taiwan
More than 200,000 mobile phone subscribers in Taiwan signed up in the first three months to add commercial music ringback tone service to their mobile phone experience. With ChungHwa Telecom's new ringback tones service, subscribers choose from a wide selection of commercial music, voices, and sound recordings to replace the standard "ring, ring" connecting tone heard by people who call them. Subscribers have now topped 500,000, creating a substantial new high margin revenue source for ChungHwa. more
