Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009

Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Research In Motion Increases Subscriber Growth Expectations

Research In Motion has announced that it expects its net subscriber account additions for fiscal Q4 to be over 20% higher than the 2.9 million net subscriber account additions forecasted by rim on December 18, 2008. rim says that it had record levels of net subscriber account additions throughout the month of December and continued to see strong levels following the holiday buying season.  more
