Android Pushes Smartphones Sales Past Feature Phones for First Time

­Western European feature phone shipments continued to decline sharply in 2Q11 as consumers increasingly move to smartphones, according to the latest European Mobile Phone Tracker from International Data Corporation (IDC). Feature phone shipments were down 29% to 20.4 million units in 2Q11, while smartphone shipments increased 48% to 21.8 million units from a year ago. The total Western European mobile phone market, however, declined 3% year on year to 42.2 million units in the quarter, according to IDC.  more

RIM handset testing dominates while Android development is on the rise and Symbian falls

­Despite an overall decline of 13.6% over the past 12 months, rim continues to have the highest total share of smartphone testing time (45%), according to internal statistics from the remote testing vendor, DeviceAnywhere. rim still accounts for  almost twice as much testing time as Android, who hold the number two spot.  more

Android Explodes in Western Europe - Becomes the Biggest Smartphone OS in 4Q10

The Western European mobile phone market grew 3.2% year-on-year to 58.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker. ­Shipments of smartphones increased to 25.6 million units, 99.4% higher than in 4Q09, to represent 44% of total shipments. Feature phone shipments declined to 33.1 million units 24.8% down compared with the previous year.  more
