Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009
Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. Survey Finds: 17% of Shoppers Spent Over $100 on Mobile Apps in 2008
A survey of 235 US smartphone users who installed applications on their devices in 2008, conducted by ABI Research in November, reveals that a surprising 16.5% spent between $100 and $499. That level of spending is especially significant given the low cost of most mobile applications, ranging from as little as a dollar or two at Apple's iPhone App Store, to at most about $25. more

As Mobile Web Usage Explodes, Full-Featured Browsers on Smartphones See Strongest Growth
One of the undisputed bright spots in 2008 has been the continued rapid growth of web usage on mobile devices. While growth of web usage is up across all mobile device classes, one of the biggest areas of growth has been smartphones. ABI Research sees this growth continuing over the next five years, with highly capable Internet browsers on smartphones expanding from 130 million in 2008 to 530 million by 2013. more

GPS-enabled Handsets to Generate Over $100 Billion in Revenues in 2012
Shipments of GPS-enabled mobile phones will generate over $50 billion in revenues in 2008, rising to $100 billion in 2012. The market for these handsets is expected to grow from around 240 million units in 2008 to over 550 million handset shipments in 2012. At present, most current GPS-enabled handsets are CDMA devices, but increasing numbers of GPS-enabled handsets for 3G/WCDMA networks will start to appear in the market from 2008 onwards. more
