Nokia Siemens Networks Pays $1.2 Billion for Motorola's Infrastructure Division

As leaked last week, Nokia Siemens Networks has now confirmed that it is paying US$1.2 billion to buy the majority of Motorola's wireless network infrastructure assets. Approximately 7,500 employees are expected to transfer to Nokia Siemens Networks from Motorola's wireless network infrastructure business when the transaction closes, including large research and development sites in the United States, China and India.  more

Deleted Data Forensics for Mobiles Phones Wins UK Accreditation

The UK-based digital forensics company, Forensic Telecommunications Services (FTS) has been awarded accreditation to ISO 17025:2005 and, in a UK first, the laboratory has been assessed and granted accreditation for its specialist techniques used in physically recovering deleted data from mobile phones, mobile phone memory chips as well as the more common standard data recovery techniques.  more

Qualcomm Opens R&D Center in Shanghai

Qualcomm has opened a new R&D Center in Shanghai, China. The Shanghai center is the second research and development facility of Qualcomm in China. Qualcomm entered the China market in the late 1990s and already has an established CDMA R&D center in Beijing, in addition to branch offices in Shanghai and Shenzhen.  more

ZTE Reports 48% Rise in 2009 Full Year Profits

ZTE has reported that its revenues for the full-year 2009 rose by 26% to US$8.82 billion. Net profit rose by 48% for the year to US$359.7 million. During the year, the Group's revenue from domestic operations amounted to US$4.5 billion, representing a year-on-year growth of 74%. Leveraging the opportunity of full-scale 3G construction in the nation, ZTE says that it emerged to become China's largest supplier of 3G network equipment as it dominated in the network construction tenders of the three leading carriers and developed positive and balanced strategic partnerships with the big three.  more

Vodafone Names New Head of R&D Division

Vodafone has announced the appointment of Siavash Alamouti as its Group Research and Development (R&D) Director, effective immediatly. Siavash will be joining Vodafone from Intel in the USA, where he most recently worked as an Intel Fellow in its Mobility Group.  more

Novatel Wireless Tests HSPA+ Dual-Carrier Data Transmission

Novatel Wireless has announced that it has successfully completed the first data transmission over dual-carrier HSPA+ using Qualcomm's MDM8220 chipset. Novatel Wireless is working with operators and plans to launch commercial data devices based on the MDM8220 in the second half of 2010.  more

ZTE to Launch Android Based Phones Later this Year

UK Considers Opening up White-Space Radio Spectrum

The UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom has started a consultation on plans to license a new technology that could wirelessly link up different devices and offer enhanced broadband access in rural areas. The technology works by searching for unoccupied radio waves called "white spaces" between TV channels to transmit and receive wireless signals.  more
