Nigeria - Total Market Grows to 63m as Penetration Hits 45%

The Nigerian mobile market's bullish growth showed no signs of abating in Q4 08. Quarterly net additions of 7.15m took the total number of customers over 60m, with a year-end figure of 62.99m, while the annual gain stood at 22.59m. By comparison, Q4 07 saw an increase of 3.39m and the 2007 boost was 11.92m. Meanwhile, the latest figures from Nigerian regulator the NCC show that at the end of January the total had risen to 64.16m.  more

Nigeria's Bullish Growth Continues in Fourth Quarter

Nigeria's telecoms regulator the NCC has reported customer numbers for the fourth quarter of 2008. The total customer base reached 62.99m at the end of the year having increased by 55.9% annually. On a quarterly basis, net additions stood at 7.15m, only just short of the national and continental record of 7.38m, set in Q2 08.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Vodafone India CEO to Retire at the End of March

Vodafone has announced that the CEO of its Indian subsidiary, Asim Ghosh is to retire in March - and named Marten Pieters as his replacement. Ghosh will however continue as a non-executive member on the board of Vodafone Essar.  more
