Who are the Fastest Growing Operators in Asia-Pacific?
The ten fastest growing companies in the Asia Pacific region added a total of just over 65m new customers between them, or two thirds of the regional total and more than one third of the global total. This total compares with just 52m for the prior quarter. All ten added more than three million new connections and the 20 fastest growing businesses all added more than one million, this emphasising both the size of the market and its diversity. more

Top 20 Operators in Asia-Pac: Bharti overtakes DoCoMo, India Gains Ground
The mobile markets of the Asia Pacific region continues to grow in importance. In Issue 99, we reported the fact that at the end of September, there were 20 networks in the world with more than 30m customers, of which eight were in this region. Those eight included the two largest - China Mobile and China Unicom - as well as the seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, 13th and 20th. Just three months later, there are now 23 networks that have passed the 30m mark and nine of these are now in the AsiaPac region, including four from India. Of the nine, four now have over 50m customers, the other two outside China being Bharti from India and DoCoMo from Japan. However, this is not to suggest that the Asia Pacific mobile market is anything other than highly dynamic - five of the ten largest companies in the region were not in the top ten last year and two were barely in the top 20. more

India and China: December Customer Numbers
The two large Chinese mobile operators both reported their December customer numbers last week, on the same day that the COAI published the same data for the Indian GSM operators. The two sets of data make an interesting comparison. Previously, we have suggested that while the Chinese market has the appearance of a controlled economy, with its near linear growth, the Indian market's expansion looked to be becoming exponential. more

GSM and W-CDMA claim 82% of Asia Pacific market
W-CDMA continued to be Asia's fastest growing technology in Q3 2006 with a proportionate increase in customer numbers of 15.7% over the three months. However, whilst the proportionate growth rate was a new record low - naturally declining as the technology gradually becomes more established on the continent - in absolute terms Q3 2006 was a record quarter for W-CDMA, with a net 5.5m new customers adopting the technology, compared with 4.0m in Q3 2005. more
