RCS Announces Top-10 Handsets Traded in First Half 2009

Online trader of cellular phones, rcs has announced its trading data for the first half of 2009 for the global open trading market of cellular phones. According to the rankings, listed below, Nokia retained the top three spots with its Smartphones, N95, 5800 and N96 respectively. The Blackberry Bold 9000 took the fourth place, while the Blackberry Javelin Curve 8900 was in sixth place. These placements for Blackberry Smartphones represent a significant increase in demand for RIM's products.  more

World's First Rich Communication Suite-based Service Now Live in South Korea

The GSM Associate (GSMA) has announced that the world's first interoperable communication service incorporating key elements of its Rich Communication Suite (rcs) specifications is now a live commercial service in South Korea. The services offered by the three South Korean operators commercialise key features of rcs such as phonebook driven buddy lists, presence capability that includes taglines and status, and voice calls and messaging.  more

Bouygues Telecom to Trial Alcatel-Lucent's IMS Platform

France's Bouygues Telecom has contracted with Alcatel-Lucent to deploy an IMS pilot network that enables the operator to test new multimedia communications services that are based on the GSM Association’s “Rich Communication Suite” specifications. The tests will take place during the second half of 2009.  more

European Commission Welcoms Romania's Lower Termination Rates

The European Commission says that it has welcomed the Romanian telecoms regulator's move to bring its regulation of mobile termination rates in line with the forthcoming Commission Recommendation. In the meantime, the Commission also called on the regulator to align the mobile termination rates charged by the third and fourth mobile operators in Romania with those allowed for the two largest operators. A letter from The Commission acknowledged the reasonably low level of rates for the two largest operators (5.03 eurocents per minute) and said that in the absence of objective cost differences, this interim rate should also be applied to the other operators as soon as possible.  more

IMS equipment market up 94% in 2008, subscribers to triple in 2009

Communications market research firm Infonetics Research says in a report that worldwide sales of IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) equipment, including HSS (home subscriber servers) and CSCF servers, nearly doubled in 2008 over 2007, up 94%. Fixed-line VoIP is remaining the primary application deployed over IMS.  more

Rich Communication Suite Initiative Gains Momentum

The GSMA has reported significant progress in the Rich Communication Suite (rcs) Initiative, a service providing enriched communication capabilities such as in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging and presence-enhanced contact management, all accessible through a user's mobile phone contact list. The initiative has generated considerable momentum across a number of fronts since the GSMA brought rcs into its work programme in September 2008, including the delivery of the rcs Release 1 specification, the addition of new programme participants and the successful completion of interoperability tests.  more

Ericsson to trial rich communication services on Spainish network

Ericsson is to trial multimedia applications based on the Rich Communication Suite standard in cooperation with Spain's Telefónica. This is the world's first live demonstration of interoperable rich communication services.  more
