Gartner Says Mobility Will Be a Trillion Dollar Business by 2014

Worldwide mobile voice and data revenue will exceed one trillion dollars a year by 2014, according to Gartner. Mobile will generate revenue from a wide range of additional services such as context, advertising, application and service sales, and so on. Smartphone Market Grew 39% in Q4 2009

The worldwide converged mobile device market (commonly referred to as smartphones) reached a new record level in a single quarter. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 54.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2009 (4Q09), up 39.0% from the same quarter a year ago. For the full year, vendors shipped a total of 174.2 million units in 2009, up 15.1% from the 151.4 million units in 2008. Converged mobile devices accounted for 15.4% of all mobile phones shipped in 2009, up slightly from 12.7% in 2008.  more

MEMS Microphones Shipments to Rise to 1 Billion in 2013

Despite a slowdown in 2009, global shipments of Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) microphones are set to more than triple from 2008 to 2013 due to their strong acceptance in mobile handsets and other applications, according to iSuppli.  more

Dell Smartphone Rumours Resurface

The persistent rumours that computer maker, Dell is preparing to launch a range of mobile phones got another boost when it was reported that the firm could launch its first handsets next month. A report in the Wall Street Journal said that Dell has had a group of engineers working on the phones for more than a year from an office in the Chicago area.  more
