Verizon fined by California court
Verizon Wireless has resolved a class action lawsuit against it, which will result in refunds for some of its customers and a change in the sales practices that are followed by the radioshack retailer. AirTouch Cellular, which later became Verizon Wireless used "oral contracts" between 1997 and 2000 as opposed to written contracts. The oral contracts lasted for two years, and had a US$150 termination fee if the customer cancelled their contract in the second year, before it had expired. However, under California law, oral contracts can only last for one year, and therefore the company was illegally charging the termination fee after the one year period had expired. Verizon Wireless must now provide written contracts to its customers connected through radioshack stores and also radioshack will be forbidden from selling Verizon products in areas that Verizon does not offer coverage. The two companies also must pay $1.5 million in fines and legal costs." more
