UK Planning a Shake-Up of Radio Spectrum

The UK government has published details of plans to revamp radio spectrum management which could resolve a long-running battle between the two original mobile networks. Vodafone and O2 have been fighting plans proposed back in 2007 by the telecoms regulator to take back some of their licensed radio spectrum and refarm it to the later networks.  more

Vodafone Extends New Zealand 900Mhz License to 2031

Vodafone has completed a series of radio spectrum swaps in New Zealand and renewed its license in the 900Mhz band. The swap in January of two 4-MHz portions of spectrum between NZ Communications and the Crown came about following discussions involving all the mobile network operators. The Government can now amalgamate some spectrum it manages, which means more will become available for non-cellular uses.  more

Ofcom Outlines Revised Plans for 900Mhz Spectrum

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom has revised its plans to liberalise the management of the radio spectrum - which is says will offer faster and more reliable wireless broadband services. The consultation builds on earlier Ofcom work to liberalise spectrum for mobile phone services and make its use more efficient.  more

3 Italia Denies Report of 3G Network Break-Up

In a terse statement, 3 Italia has firmly denied the story published by Sole 24 Ore regarding the sale of company assets to Italian competitors. The newspaper had reported that Hutchison Whampoa's Italian subsidiary had held talks which could have lead to the break up, and effective shut-down of the network as a going concern.   more

Vodafone Seeks Delay in India's 3G License Auction

Even mighty Vodafone seems to be feeling the credit crunch, and has written to the Indian government seeking a delay to the 3G license auction - citing difficulties in raising the necessary funds. The auction is expected to be held before the end of this year, although recent reports have suggested the government may have to delay the auction due to radio spectrum issues.  more

Indian Government Investigates Russian Investment in Shyam Telelink

India's Finance Ministry has issued a "show clause" notice on Shyam Telelink after Russia's Sistema recently increased its holding in the company to 73.97% without seeking government approval. The government has a mandatory cap of 75% for foreign ownership, but has to approve any investments above 49%, as Vodafone found when it took control of Vodafone Essar.  more
