T-Mobile USA Expected to Launch 3G Services Tomorrow

Multiple news reports are claiming that T-Mobile is planning to switch on its WCDMA network in New York tomorrow (May 1st) - followed by around 26 other cities by the end of this year. T-Mobile owns a large block of 1700 Mhz spectrum, but has been hampered by delays by the regulator in releasing the spectrum for the company to use.  more

Cingular confirms move to GSM and EDGE

As reported here yesterday, Cingular Wireless has confirmed that it will be switching its network technology, providing initially a GPRS/GSM overlay on its existing TDMA and analogue network, then proceeding to EDGE. The company also confirmed that it will not need any additional radio spectrum to roll out the EDGE service, but did not rule out the need for extra spectrum in the future when demand rises, probably in about five years time. The company did not rule out a future migration to WCDMA, subject to the spectrum being made available in the future. more
