UK Considers Opening up White-Space Radio Spectrum
The UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom has started a consultation on plans to license a new technology that could wirelessly link up different devices and offer enhanced broadband access in rural areas. The technology works by searching for unoccupied radio waves called "white spaces" between TV channels to transmit and receive wireless signals. more

Sweden Consults on Auction of 800Mhz Radio Spectrum
Sweden's telecoms regulator, the PTS has issued a request for views on future use of the 800 MHz radio spectrum and the market's interest in licenses in the band. The Swedish government decided in 2007 that the band should be used for other services than terrestrial broadcast television. The PTS says that it wishes to make the frequencies available to the market as soon as possible. more

KPN returns Telfort frequencies to the Dutch government
Netherlands based KPN is to return some of its 3G radio spectrum to the telecoms regulator following a court ruling earlier this year. The court ruled that KPN subsidiary, Telfort had not made full use of its 3G radio spectrum and imposed an ongoing series of fines until the spectrum was used. Handing the spectrum back to the regulator has capped the fines. more

India Running Out of 2G Radio Spectrum in Some Areas
India is running out of radio spectrum for its existing 2G network operators and has exhausted all the available spectrum in some of its license circles. According to an internal analysis by the department of telecom, seen by The Economic Times, 10 of the circles are now dependent on the military to vacate its radio spectrum if any additional capacity is to be made available. more
