China Telecom Profits Slump 96.3% on Write-Downs
China Telecom has reported a 96.3 percent slump in its full-year profits after making a RMB 24 billion (US$3.5 billion) write-down of its legacy XiaoLingTong wireless network which faces closure. Both China Telecom and China Unicom have been ordered to shut down their low-cost XiaoLingTong mobile telephone system in order to free up the radio spectrum for 3G services. The two companies have been given three years to shut down the networks. more

China to Allocate Additional Spectrum to 3G Networks
It has been reported that China is planning to allocate additional radio spectrum to the homegrown 3G service, by taking it from the low-cost XiaoLingTong local area wireless service. Xie Feipo, from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the ministry had asked fixed-line operators to return the PHS radio spectrum so it could be reassigned to the TD-SCDMA network. more
