Huawei Launches World's First Multi-mode Base Station Controller

Huawei has launched the world's first convergent Base Station Controller (BSC) which integrates both the GSM BSC and the UMTS RNC (Radio Network Controller) into one multi-mode controller. Zain successfully trials HSPA+ in a live 3G network

Zain Saudi Arabia has concluded trials of a Nokia Siemens Networks supplied Internet-HSPA (I-HSPA) software upgrade within Zain's existing radio access network. The trial introduced a simple, flat architecture demonstrating how traffic can bypass the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), to deliver improved data transmission speeds. Because of the re-routing, there is no need to build in additional capacity, in effect reducing the OPEX and CAPEX.  more

FMC and femtocell equipment markets poised to take off in face of downturn

Femtocells – to Be or Not to Be?

Although mobile operators are increasingly optimistic about femtocells, there are many doubts circulating around this new technology as it struggles to resolve key challenges such as functionality and cost. Operators believe that they are capable of cutting costs and retaining more customers, but proof remains to be seen. In the last femtocells study, Frost & Sullivan is skeptical, outlining multiple challenges, that do not look like they could be resolved by the end of 2008.  more

Nortel Wins CDMA Expansion Contract in Nigeria

Nortel has won a CDMA network upgrade contract from Nigeria based Multi-Links Telecommunications worth US$45 million. The initial phase of the contract has been awarded and will use Nortel's CDMA 1xEV-DO Rev A solution in the metropolitan region of Lagos, the prime economic center of the country.  more

Nokia to Enable RAN Sharing by upto Four Networks

CDMA450 Upgrade for Russia

Russia's Sky Link says that it is increasing the voice capacity of the Sky Link network in Krasnodar and enhancing it with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology. Krasnodar Cellular Network, the regional Sky Link operator, and Lucent are upgrading existing Lucent base stations with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology and installing new equipment that will enable the operator's Sky Turbo service, which provides data speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second. The project is beginning in the cities of Krasnodar, Sochi, and Novorossisk. more
