Canadian Operator Orders R-UIM Cards

Gemplus International has been selected by Canada's TELUS Mobility to develop r-uim cards that will tie together the Canadian wireless carrier's CDMA and iDEN networks and enable world roaming on GSM networks."The ability to tie together CDMA, iDEN and GSM networks to enhance roaming options will give clients increased mobile freedom, enabling them to travel and do business more efficiently," said Robert Blumenthal, TELUS Mobility's Vice President of Products and Services. "Gemplus' proven track record of providing high-quality smart cards makes it an ideal partner in the development of r-uim cards."r-uim smart cards authenticate and identify individual subscribers on wireless networks, enabling them to freely carry their subscription and personal information from phone to phone, and around the world.TELUS Mobility, which already uses Gemplus SIM cards in its iDEN Mike phones, is researching the benefits of expanding smart cards to its CDMA network. With this move, TELUS Mobility joins the other 40 CDMA operators using r-uim, including operators located in China, India, Japan and Brazil."Gemplus is pleased to support TELUS Mobility as it develops r-uim technology in Canada and thus the inherent smart card advantages of portability and security. SIM sales expected to rise

Schlumberger Smart Cards and Terminals says that after a year treading water, shipment rates of microprocessor cards surged back into double-digits with a 13% rise in 2002. Although the general economic climate impacted margins, there are still strong prospects: As a corollary of the increasing need for security we've been facing in the past couple of months, corporate badge and public sector ID cards projects have started to materialize significantly and could become significant volume markets -- joining the existing heavyweight mobile communications and banking segments. Such developments will support double-digit growth for at least the next two years, the company anticipates. more

New supplier for CDMA SIM cards

Smart card solution provider Setec has said that it will introduce a new SIM card, r-uim (Removable User Identity Module), for CDMA networks in the second quarter of this year. The r-uim card functions much like the GSM SIM card and can also be used in a GSM mobile phone. Setec has developed the card especially for the Chinese market, but it can be used in other CDMA networks as well. more

Qualcomm announces CDMA SIM card solution

Qualcomm has announced the rollout of the world's first integrated cdma2000 1x Removable User Identity Module (r-uim) handset solution. Samples of the Qualcomm CDMA Technologies Mobile Station Modem integrated circuit and system software shipped in December 2000 and offer direct interface with the new CDMA-compliant Schlumberger Simera Airflex smart cards, announced in June 2000. The demand for r-uim smart card capabilities and services has been driven by Korean and Chinese network operators to allow their subscribers to roam across CDMA and GSM networks." more
