The worldwide mobile phone market grew 19.8% year over year in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11) fueled by high smartphone growth, especially in emerging markets, and gains made by market challengers. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 371.8 million units in 1Q11 compared to 310.5 million units in the first quarter of 2010. more

Sprint Outlines More iDEN to CDMA Migration Plans
Sprint has outlined further plans for its migration of its Push-to-Talk services over to its CDMA network. The Sprint Direct Connect will launch with an initial portfolio of rugged devices from Motorola Mobility and Kyocera. The devices will feature most of the capabilities available on current Sprint Nextel iDEN based phones. The planned portfolio will include an ultra-rugged camera flip phone and an Android Smartphone with a touch screen and a qwerty keyboard. more

T-Mobile USA to Shut-Down Danger Service by June
T-Mobile USA has confirmed that it will shut-down support for Microsoft's Danger Service, used by T-Mobile Sidekick customers for data back-up services. T-Mobile said that it will provide offers for its Sidekick customers before May 31, 2011, to help make a transition from their existing Sidekick device to a new device. more

Vodafone today announced the launch of the Vodafone Webbox, that enables internet access though a customer's existing television set, just by plugging in a keyboard. The Webbox has been developed specifically for customers in emerging markets, where technology and cost barriers often exclude many from enjoying affordable, ready internet access at home or in the workplace. A 14 x 25cm qwerty keyboard, the Webbox uses standard RCA connectors to plug into the television. more
