Worldwide Semiconductor Revenue Down in 2008 - Qualcomm Bucks the Trend

Worldwide semiconductor revenue totaled $255 billion in 2008, down 5.4 percent, or a decrease of $14.5 billion from 2007 revenue, according to the final market share analysis by Gartner. The steep decline in the market in the final quarter of 2008, combined with the ongoing economic weakness, signals far worse declines in 2009.  more

Desktop Computers are Ceding Ground to Mobile Enabled Laptops

Laptops outstripped desktops for the first time in terms of revenue due to a higher average sale price (ASP). Frost & Sullivan believes another could follow this first in 2009, when laptop unit sales will exceed that of desktops, globally. Analysis from Frost & Sullivan finds that the market earned revenues of US$137.3 billion in 2008 and estimates this to reach US$211.4 billion in 2014.  more

Chinese Handset Production Growth Down to Single Figures

China's CCID Consulting has reported that after a period of rapid growth over the past few years, the Chinese mobile handset chips market experienced a conspicuous decline in 2008. The research firm predicts that the scale of Chinese mobile phone chips market is expected to reach RMB 110 billion (US$16 billion), up by 6%, down to single-digit growth for the first time.  more

Sony to Embed Qualcomm's Gobi Platform in Laptop Computers

Sony says that it has selected qualcomm's Gobi mobile Internet technology for use in its VAIO notebook PC lines. Sony is the first notebook manufacturer to make Gobi technology a standard feature in several of its PC models.  more

ZTE, Qualcomm and Aircell Collaborate on In-flight Mobile Broadband System

It has been announced that China's ZTE has been working with qualcomm to create the networking platform for Aircell's new Inflight Internet service, Gogo, which first began service in August on select American Airlines flights. Aircell's Air-to-Ground (ATG) service relies on ZTE's EV-DO Rev. A base stations and IP switching platform and qualcomm's aircraft-mounted modems.  more

Qualcomm To Enable Skyhook Wi-Fi Positioning on gpsOne Platform
