Qualcomm Cancels UMB Development - Focuses on LTE

qualcomm has decided to cancel development of Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) products as the company seeks to cut costs in the face of a slow down in demand for mobile phones. The company will now focus on developing Long Term Evolution (LTE) based platforms - which has been backed by the majority of WCDMA based mobile operators as their network upgrade path.  more

Taiwanese OEMs Switching from Ericsson to Qualcomm for 3G Phones

Taiwan's handset manufacturers are increasingly switching from the Ericsson mobile phone platform to qualcomm's own handset platform - report local industry sources. Sources told DigiTimes that because HTC has had good success with its qualcomm-based 3G handsets, other major handset vendors such as Motorola, LG Electronics, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Palm all intend to adopt the qualcomm platform for their 3G products.  more

Nokia Reports Sharp Drop in Q3 Profits

Nokia has reported a sharp drop in third-quarter profits to ¢â€š¬1.09 billion (US$1.48 billion) from ¢â€š¬1.56 billion (US$2.12 billion) for the same period a year earlier. Net sales were down 5 percent to in the third quarter to ¢â€š¬12.2 billion (US$16.58 billion) and were down 7 percent compared to the second quarter. At constant currency, group net sales would have increased 1% year on year and decreased 7% sequentially.  more
