Optus Buys Australian 3G Radio Spectrum from Qualcomm

Australian mobile network operator, Optus will double its radio spectrum in urban areas if plans to buy spectrum from qualcomm's local subsidiary are approved. The mobile network says that it has signed an agreement to acquire spectrum licences for 10MHz of paired spectrum in the 2100MHz band in Australia's capital cities.  more

Qualcomm to Optimise Indian 3G Network

qualcomm is to work with India's MTNL to optimise its existing 3G (WCDMA) network in Delhi and Mumbai. MTNL will be working with qualcomm's Engineering Services Group (ESG), a part of qualcomm Corporate Engineering Services, a global 3G network consulting service provider.  more

ZTE and Qualcomm Collaborate to Boost UMTS System Performance

qualcomm and ZTE have announced a collaboration to integrate qualcomm's Uplink Interference Cancellation (ULIC) technology into ZTE's next-generation UMTS base station products. qualcomm sasy that this can boost operators UMTS data throughput by up to 60 percent and deliver a user experience that is comparable to LTE in a similar channel bandwidth. The technology also enables UMTS operators to increase voice capacity by up to 45 percent.  more

Japanese Operators Exceed 100 Million 3G Subscribers

qualcomm says that Japan's mobile operators have exceeded 100 million 3G CDMA subscribers as of April 2009, citing data announced by the Telecommunications Carriers Association in Japan.  more

Qualcomm Slips into Second-Quarter Loss on Broadcom Settlement

Now that the Broadcom patent issue has been finalised, qualcomm has published its delayed quarterly financial results, which recorded a loss due to that Broadcom settlement. qualcomm reported second quarter net loss of US$289 million, compared to profit of US$766 million a year ago. Revenues dropped to US$2.46 billion, compared to US$2.61 billion in the prior year and US$2.52 billion in the prior quarter.  more

Qualcomm and Broadcom Wave a Paper and Declare "Peace For Our Time"

The acrimonious patent battle between qualcomm and Broadcom is finally over. The two firms have entered into a settlement and multi-year patent agreement, which will result in the dismissal with prejudice of all litigation between the companies, including all patent infringement claims in the International Trade Commission and U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, as well as the withdrawal by Broadcom of its complaints to the European Commission and the Korea Fair Trade Commission.  more

HTC to Appeal Against German Patent Ruling

Taiwan based handset manufacturer, HTC says that it will appeal against a German court ruling that it had infringed patents owned by holding firm, IP-com related to 3G radio technologies. The court, in the German city of Mannheim, ruled against HTC last Friday.  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

Nokia Deal to Boost Qualcomm's Dominance in Mobile Handset Baseband Chips?

Due to its recent agreement with Nokia, qualcomm is likely to solidify its lead in the global market for mobile-handset baseband semiconductors, according to iSuppli Corp. Based on iSuppli's preliminary estimate, qualcomm in the fourth quarter accounted for 40.6 percent of worldwide revenue from shipments of mobile handset baseband semiconductors, up from 36.3 percent in the third quarter.  more
