Wataniya Eyeing Further Acquisitions
Kuwaiti telco, Wataniya expects to to announce an acquisition shortly and is considering others as its main shareholder, Qatar Telecom (qtel) seeks growth outside its home market. qtel paid US$3.7 billion for a 51% stake in Wataniya in March 2007, and later increased that to 52.5%. The company will be listed on the Doha Securities Market later this year. more

IFC Supports Development of New Mobile Network in the Palestinian Territories
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is investing US$30 million in Wataniya Palestine, as part of a US$85 million loan, to help build a mobile-phone network in the Palestinian West Bank. Wataniya Palestine is a joint venture of the Palestine Investment Fund and Wataniya Telecom, which is majority-owned by Qatar's qtel. more

Wataniya Palestine Granted Operating Radio Spectrum
Following a series of delays, it has been reported that Wataniya Palestine has been granted its operational radio spectrum so that it can launch its GSM network in the Palestinian Territories. Qatar based newspaper, The Peninsula reported that spectrum agreement reached with the Palestinian Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology (MTIT) will be for a staged release of radio frequencies over the next several months. more

Qatar Telecom Buys Control of Kuwait's Wataniya
Qatar Telecom has announced that it is paying US$3.7 billion for a controlling shareholding in Kuwait based, Wataniya, which has mobile operations in seven countries in the region. qtel will acquire 51% of the share capital of Wataniya from Kuwait Projects Company Holding KSC (KIPCO) and other related parties as well as further and additional direct investments in its Algeria and Iraq operations for a total consideration of $3.7 billion. more
