Aptilo Networks Wins WiMAX Contracts in the Mid-East and Asia Pacific

Qatar Telecom Claims 50,000 HSDPA Subscribers

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has announced that it now has 50,000 customers connected to its HSDPA mobile network, which was launched in July 2007. Qtel's 3.5G network covers most of the East Coast of Qatar including Doha, Wakrah, Rayyan, Messaieed, Khor and Ras Laffan. Qtel is working on improving the coverage further within these areas and also to roll out the 3.5G network to other areas.  more

Airspan Wins WiMAX Contract in Jordan

Airspan Networks has been awarded a contract to supply ACT Jordan with its HiperMAX base stations and its EasyST indoor and ProST outdoor subscriber terminals. ACT Limited is a joint venture between Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and A.A. Turki Corporation for Trading and Contracting (ATCO) of Saudi Arabia.  more

Vodafone Wins Mobile License in Qatar

Qatar's telecoms regulator, ictQATAR has awarded the country's second mobile operator license to a consortium made up of Vodafone and Qatar Foundation. They submitted the highest bid in the second round auction. The other eligible consortiums submitting bids were Argos (Verizon and Virgin Mobile) and Etisalat.  more

Qatar Planning Second Mobile License Award

Qatar's telecoms regulator, the ictQATAR has announced plans to offer a second mobile license in the country, to compete with monopoly operatot, Qatar Telecom (Qtel). The competitive selection process to own and operate a mobile telecommunications network and provide telecommunications services begins with a pre-qualification phase. During this phase, interested applicants will be required to satisfy specific criteria and procedures to qualify for selection.  more

Qatar Telecom Buys Control of Kuwait's Wataniya

Qatar Telecom has announced that it is paying US$3.7 billion for a controlling shareholding in Kuwait based, Wataniya, which has mobile operations in seven countries in the region. Qtel will acquire 51% of the share capital of Wataniya from Kuwait Projects Company Holding KSC (KIPCO) and other related parties as well as further and additional direct investments in its Algeria and Iraq operations for a total consideration of $3.7 billion. more
