Indosat Orders Mobile Softswitch from Nokia Siemens

Indonesia's Indosat has ordered a mobile softswitch from Nokia Siemens Networks as part of its move to an all-IP network infrastructure. Nokia Siemens Networks will also provide a broad range of services including replacement and relocation of old equipment, network design, new equipment implementation and project management as well as training and maintenance for all products and solutions included in the deal.  more

Airspan Wins WiMAX Expansion Contract in Jordan

Airspan Networks has announced today that wi-tribe has contracted for additional WiMAX equipment to expand their network across Jordan. wi-tribe Jordan has deployed Airspan's 3.6-GHz HiperMAX solution which allows a carrier the choice of fixed or mobile WiMAX on a single hardware platform. Airspan's HiperMAX base station with advanced radio technologies has enabled wi-tribe to minimize the number of base stations required for indoor coverage.  more

Indonesian Operators Call for Limits on New Market Entrants

Indonesia's telecoms operators are lobbying the government to restrict the number of new entrants into their local market. The Indonesian Cellular Telephones Association (ATSI) chairman Merza Fachys was reported by the Jakarta Post as saying that due to limited frequency allocations and phone numbers, there was no room for any new players.  more

Qtel Launches WiMAX Network in Jordan

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has announced the launch, in Jordan, of the first WiMAX services of wi-tribe, QtelÃ's all-new broadband Internet subsidiary. Japan's DoCoMo Considering Mid-East Investments

Datacom to Announce $2.8 Billion GSM Tender Next Week

India's Datacom is planning to issue a tender for up to 70 million GSM lines for its new network next week in a contract which could be worth over Rs 12,000 crore (US$2.8 billion) in the next four years.  more

Vodafone to Pay $2.1 Billion for Mobile License in Qatar

ictQATAR, Qatar's telecommunications regulator has announced that the Vodafone/Qatar Foundation Consortium will pay a fee of QAR 7.716 billion (US$2.12 billion) for the country's second mobile license. Vodafone and partner Qatar Foundation Consortium won Qatar's second mobile license, beating AT&T and Verizon Communications in December last year - although the final payment details were not announced at the time.  more

Aptilo Networks Wins WiMAX Contracts in the Mid-East and Asia Pacific

Qatar Telecom Claims 50,000 HSDPA Subscribers

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has announced that it now has 50,000 customers connected to its HSDPA mobile network, which was launched in July 2007. Qtel's 3.5G network covers most of the East Coast of Qatar including Doha, Wakrah, Rayyan, Messaieed, Khor and Ras Laffan. Qtel is working on improving the coverage further within these areas and also to roll out the 3.5G network to other areas.  more
