Qtel Quarterly Profits Jump 59%
Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has reported a 59% rise in Q2 profits of QAR 1.04 billion (US$286.8 million), while revenues rose by 30% to QAR 5.93 billion. The Group's EBITDA increased by 36 percent in H1 2009 over the same period last year, increasing to QAR 5.5 billion (H1 2008: QAR 4.0 billion). more
Wataniya Eyeing Further Acquisitions
Kuwaiti telco, Wataniya expects to to announce an acquisition shortly and is considering others as its main shareholder, Qatar Telecom (Qtel) seeks growth outside its home market. Qtel paid US$3.7 billion for a 51% stake in Wataniya in March 2007, and later increased that to 52.5%. The company will be listed on the Doha Securities Market later this year. more

Indosat Plans $360 Million Network Expansion Expenditure

Vodafone Granted Extra Time to Expand its Qatari Network
Qatar's telecoms regulator, ictQATAR has amended the license recently granted to Vodafone to grant the company an additional six months to achieve national coverage. Under the terms of its license Vodafone Qatar was required to achieve 98% population coverage and launch full services by 1 March 2009. The revised terms require 98% coverage by 1 September 2009 and the launch of services, including two-way phone mobile and SMS, by 1 July 2009. more

Vodafone Signs Tower Sharing Deal in Qatar
Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and Vodafone Qatar have signed both an interconnection agreement between their networks - and a deal to allow Vodafone to share Qtel towers for its own infrastructure. The Outdoor Site Sharing Agreement is an agreement which allows Vodafone Qatar to share Qtel mobile towers and Qtel to share Vodafone Qatar mobile towers. Both companies will have separate active mobile networks. more

Qatar Telecom Gets Clearance to Increase Indonesian Investment
Qatar Telecom (QTel) has confirmed that it will increase its holding in Indonesia's Indosat to 65% following a clarification about foreign investor rules from the Indonesian government. The authorities have agreed to allow Qtel to own up to 65 percent of Indosat, while removing a previously discussed condition that Indosat would transfer its fixed business into a separate company. more
