Pakistan Planning 3G License Tender Imminently

­Pakistan's telecoms regulator, the pta says that it plans to offer 3G licenses in the near future, without specifying a specific deadline. Pakistan to Increase Penalty for Handling Stolen Mobile Phones

Pakistan's telecoms regulator has asked the government to pass a new law and permit imprisonment for up to 49 years for handling stolen mobile phones. The regulator has been clamping down on the sale of unregistered mobile phones, and the move is thought to be related people having short term access to SIM cards in stolen phones prior to being cut off when reported stolen.  more

Pakistan Cuts Off Over 10 Million Mobile Phone Accounts

Pakistan's telecoms regulator says that it has blocked some 10.5 million SIM cards after their users failed to register their ownership details with the mobile operators. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (pta) Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen also expressed concerns that many retailers were still flouting the rules requiring proof of id before selling new SIMs.  more

Pakistan to Lower Mobile Termination Rates

Pakistan Reports Second Slowest Subscriber Growth in Two Years

The latest figures from the Pakistani telecoms regulator show that the mobile market in Pakistan grew to 78.74m customers at the end of January. The figure for monthly net additions of 1.86m was 17% down on the January 2007 total, and also represented the second lowest figure for two years, the lowest being the 1.52m recorded last October.  more

Pakistan Shuts Down Retailers Breaking SIM Sale Regulations

Pakistan's telecoms authority, the pta has ordered the five mobile operators to seal and terminate registration of the 11 franchisees located in different cities across the country. These franchisees were selling mobile connections without following the standard procedure laid down by pta - which now requires all new subscribers to provide proof of identity before they are allowed to sign up for a mobile service.  more

Pakistan Confirms Formal Mobile Licenses in Two Regional Zones

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (pta) says that it has deposited Rs.1.2 billion (US$20 million) with the Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K) Council Secretariat and Northern Areas (NAs) Secretariat on account of Initial License Fee (ILF) collected from 4 mobile operators to whom licenses were issued for AJ&K and NAs.  more
