Belgium Regulator Not to Automatically Extend GSM License Terms

Belgium's telecoms regulator, BIPT and Government Minister van Quickenborne have declined to automatically renew the GSM licenses for two of the country's mobile operators, proximus (owned by Belgacom) and Mobistar (majority owned by France Telecom).  more

Mobistar - MVNOs Boost Growth but ARPU Drops Again

Third-party net additions have outstripped net additions from retail services for the third successive quarter at second-placed Belgian operator, Mobistar, majority owned by France Telecom. The operator's first MVNO, in the form of quad-play telco Telenet, launched in August 2006 and was followed less than a year later by Lycamobile, the pan-European MVNO offering low-cost international calls. It was this latter player which contributed the bulk of the 155k net additions seen in Q4 2007 - the highest number in any quarter for over six years - whilst the two MVNOs in combination provided 72.7% of the new customers.  more

German Regulator to Investigate Complaints Against Vodafone/T-Mobile

Belgacom Shows Good Q4 Customer Growth – But at Some Cost

Code of conduct for MMS content providers

In the light of the development of SMS and MMS information and entertainment services,Belgium's Mobistar and proximus, have presented a code of conduct intended for providers of these services. This code of ethics sets out a series of rules and recommendations aimed at ensuring that mobile operator customers receive better information and protection. This code will be appended to contracts concluded between operators and service providers. more

Belgium 3G auction finishes

The Belgium 3G auctions finished on Friday, after just one round. The government has raised a total of US$419 million, far less than the expected US$1.4 billion. Mobistar and KPN Orange paid US$139.6 million and proximus paid slightly more at US$139.8 million. The proximus license has a slightly different spectrum to the other two licenses, which should reduce interference problems, hence the higher price. The licenses are for 20 years, and commercial services must start by the end of the year." more
