Botswana Reminds PrePay Subscribers to Register Details by Year-End

Botswana's telecoms regulator has warned that the vast majority of prepay SIM cards have yet to register their ownership details before a cut-off deadline at the end of this year. According to the Botswana Telecommunications Authority's Public Relations Officer, Twoba Koontse, just 267,113 subscribers have registered their details.  more

Tanzania to Require SIM Registration

Tanzania's government has joined the growing trend for countries to require all prepay SIM cards to be registered with the network operators, citing the usual reasons of crime and terrorism. The Minister for Communication, Science and Technology, Prof. Peter Msolla, said the government would soon table a bill in the National Assembly for the establishment of a Central Equipment Identification Register (CEIR).  more

MTS and Sicap Team up to Offer Dynamic SIM Services in Belarus

Mobile network operator, MTS Belarus is to launch a SIM upgrade which will continuously display a prepay customer's balance on their mobile phone display. The service is being provided by Sicap. Real time information is enabled by connecting a Sicap over the air SIM applet to the MTS call billing server. As such, each call is immediately debited from the account balance and the updated remaining credit displayed.  more

Singapore Network Offers PrePay Mobile Data for Visitors

Singapore's MobileOne (M1) has launched a prepay mobile data tariff which aimed directly at travelers to the country. The network operator said that the new service will provide a cheaper alternative to the broadband connection services provided at most hotels. The service will also benefit the occasional broadband users who do not wish to be tied to service contracts.  more
