Yamaha targeting European ringtone market
Yamaha says that it has selected Netsize to deliver its catalogue of mobile ringtone content (Yamaha Super Ringtones) across 24 operators in seven European countries. Already a major mobile content provider in Japan, with more than 3.4 million subscribers, this is the company's first venture into the growing European ringtone market. Using the Netsize infrastructure, Yamaha hopes to achieve first year sales of over 9 million. more

Norway's Beep Science and Netsize have showcased the first pan-European implementation for the download management and rights payment of copyright protected content such as music, images, animations and video clips to mobile phones. SMS market offers increased opportunities for mobile content providers
10% of Europe's SMS traffic now comes from value-added services and content such as ringtones, quizzes and mobile chat, says international wireless messaging operator Netsize. The research, taken from Netsize's recently published European SMS Guide and presented at last week's SMS 2003 conference, also shows an increase in the use of premium rate SMS as a billing mechanism for such content. With mobile ownership now over 75% across Europe, the findings suggest that despite voice revenues levelling off, the market for mobile content remains strong. more

GPRS/UMTS in Europe is back on the road
UMTS will be a tool with which mobile operators optimise their networks, rebuild their balance sheets and retain the loyalty of customers. These are the main conclusions of a report published jointly by Arthur D. Little and Exane, "Back in the Road: But Who's Got the Map?" The report argues that mobile multimedia will spark competition in certain European countries, while the UK will remain the most competitive country for mobile operators in Europe. Competition between operators for customers using data services will cause changes in market share, which may lead to mobile operators with a subscriber base less than 10% of the population struggling for survival. more

Music recognition service prepares for launch
The music recognition company, Shazam Entertainment has appointed Mobileway to provide it with a premium SMS solution to all four major mobile operators in the UK for the company's service at launch this Summer. Shazam has developed a real-time song identification service that will be deployed to mobile phone users. When users hear a song they like they simply dial Shazam's four-digit number from their mobile, let their phones listen along to the music for 15 seconds, and immediately learn the name of the song and the artist via SMS. The company has developed a technology in audio pattern recognition to enable this service, for which six patents have been filed. more
