Premium SMS Scratchcard Vendor Fined for Misleading Promotions
The UK's premium rate telephony regulator, PhonepayPlus has slapped a £100,000 fine on a company that used scratchcards to promote a premium SMS service. Abstract Games (trading as Mediaprom) has also been barred from providing or operating any scratchcard services for six months, except those for which compliance advice has been sought and implemented to PhonepayPlus' satisfaction. more

Australian Regulator Clamps Down on Premium SMS Abuse
Australia's Communications and Media Authority has announced plans to increase consumer protection when dealing with premium short message services (SMS). The ACMA plans to mandate a minimum set of standards and a "significantly improved" industry-developed code that sets out detailed rules and procedures for a number of matters. more

Telcos Believe Launching New Mobile Content Should Take Less than a Month
A survey commissioned by Valista and conducted at the Building Blocks 2008 conference held last week found that over 86 percent of the industry insiders interviewed believe that it should take less than a month to launch new mobile content and services with an operator. Vodafone UK moves to the top spot in off-portal sales
Looking back over 2007, UK based mobile billing provider, Bango reports strong commercial gains for UK operators that moved to open up the mobile web, with Vodafone UK rising to first place in the value of off-portal content sales. Measured across its total base of content providers, Bango saw traffic grow fastest on networks where steps were taken to encourage more browsing off-portal and payout rates increased to content providers. more

Calls for Tax Exemption for Charity SMS Donations
Vir2, a provider of SMS marketing and fundraising solutions for charities, has welcomed the decision by UK politican, Mark Oaten MP to file an Early Day Motion calling upon the Government to stop charging VAT (sales tax) on UK charity donations made by SMS. All other methods of giving to charity are VAT exempt. Premium SMS texts are a particularly useful way of collecting money quickly, but the Government are not treating it the same as other methods. more
