Australian Regulator Consults on Blocking Unwanted Premium-Rate SMS

­The Australian Communications and Media Authority is seeking feedback on its proposed new rules for blocking unwanted high-cost services delivered to mobile phones. The ACMA released a consultation paper last month, which sets out the proposed rules.  more

Premiums SMS Complaints Surge

Customer service, contracts, and premium rate SMS messages were some of the leading causes of complaint to Australia's Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman in the year to June 2006. Complaints to the Ombudsman increased by 11.0% to 87,593 over the previous year, with the fastest rate of increase among internet services, followed by mobile and landline services. more

Fines for Misleading Premium SMS Services

The UK regulator which looks after premium rate SMS services has imposed several fines on mobile content firms for breaking the rules about marketing to customers. The rules were tightened last year, driven in large by complaints from customers about unexpected subscription services when purchasing ringtones. more

Mobile Content Firm Fined And Banned From Service

The UK arm of the mobile content provider, LaNetro Zed has been fined US$44,000 by the UK's premium rate telephony regulator, ICSTIS and also had access to its premium rate SMS services barred for three months. The company is appealing the fine and ban, and while the appeal is being held, the company will be permitted to continue offering service. more

Big Fine for Crazy Frog

The UK's Premium rate services regulator ICSTIS has fined the Crazy Frog service provider mBlox US$71,000 and ordered it to pay refunds to all those who complained to the regulator. The sanctions have been imposed after ICSTIS found the promotions for the service to be misleading and not clear enough in terms of the costs involved. more

Kazza to sell ringtones along withMP3 downloads

UK-based wireless entertainment provider The Music Solution (TMS) has been selected to provide mobile phone ringtones to the peer-to-peer application, Kazaa, through the Ringtone Channel. TMS has selected Netsize to support the global delivery and European billing of content. Kazaa is the world's most downloaded peer-to-peer software application with over 60 million global users. more

Vodafone to clamp down on SMS Spam

Vodafone UK is taking steps to control the amount of unsolicited text messages its customers receive. It is the first operator to launch a trial initiative in the UK designed to help reduce these texts. When an unsolicited text message is received the customer can forward it, free of charge, directly to 87726 or VSPAM on their mobile keypad. Vodafone will then receive a consolidated report of all the unsolicited text messages reported by its customers. Currently when customers report an unsolicited text message to Vodafone they are advised to contact the Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services (ICSTIS). With this new initiative it means that they will no longer have to do this and can simply forward the message to VSPAM to allow automated reporting. more
