BSNL launches Indian GSM network
India's Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched its nationwide GSM network. Launching the state owned company's mobile services, Minister of Communications, IT and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Pramod Mahajan said BSNL's pre-paid cellular services would be called 'ex-cel'. more

India may delay national network rollout
Local media reports in India have suggested that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is renegotiating the value of its GSM agreements. The agreements are with Motorola for Southern India, Ericsson for Eastern and Northern India along with Lucent for the West of India, but are just Advance purchase orders (APOs) and not formal contracts. The reports say that the renegotiations are due to rising costs and the infrastructure suppliers are trying to hold the network to its agreements. The disagreement could delay the network deployment by as much as a year. Apparently, Communications Minister Pramod Mahajan is concerned at the prices being charged by the suppliers and wants them renegotiated." more
