Who are the Top 10 Operators in Africa and Mid-East
Once again, the components of the list of the ten largest companies in the Middle East and Africa region are unchanged quarter on quarter, but, as before, there are several positional changes. Vodacom in South Africa is still by far the largest business in the region, with 23.9m customers and it is difficult to imagine its position being threatened at any time in the near future. The only other likely contenders for the top spot are Nigerian - given the three to one difference in population between the two countries - but with five competitors there, rather than just three, the threat could take some time to materialise. As it is, Nigerian companies take fifth and sixth place on the list and even these two taken together still don't quite match Vodacom's total. more

Four Bidding for Moroccan 3G Licenses
Morocco's telecoms regulator, Agence Nationale de Reglementation des Telecommunications (ANRT) has announced that four companies are bidding for the three available 3G licenses the country is planning to offer. The four bidders are Vivendi's Maroc Telecom - local operator, Connect - a joint venture between Telefonica and Portugal Telecom, Meditel - and finally, Nejma Telecom Maroc, a subsidiary of Kuwait's Wataniya. more
