GPS smartphone shipments overtake PNDs in EMEA

Based on its latest research, Canalys estimates that global shipments of pnds (Portable Navigation Devices) in Q3 2008 rose 14% year-on-year, from 7.7 million to 8.8 million units, with North America and Asia Pacific still seeing good volume growth, of 49% and 25% respectively. Almost 40% of smart phones shipping in EMEA have GPS integrated

A new report Canalys finds that growth slowed in the smart phone market in EMEA in Q2, but total shipments of 12.6 million still made it the second biggest quarter ever in volume terms. Canalys estimates that smart phones represented 13% of all mobile phone shipments.  more

Asia Navigation Device Shipments to Exceed 185 Million in 2012

Personal Navigation Devices Will Surpass 100 Million Units by 2011

The consumer navigation market has seen unprecedented levels of activity and growth in 2007, mainly driven by pnds (personal navigation devices) which offer a compelling mix of ease of use, features, portability, and affordability says ABI Research. As an established mass market CE category, pnd markets will continue to grow strongly to reach a global sales volume of more than 100 million units by 2011. Dedicated pnds will remain the preferred form factor for use in the car but will be complemented by handset-based systems for pedestrian navigation and new use cases such as outdoors. New form factors such as portable media players, ultra mobile PCs, Internet tablets and mobile Internet devices will also appear.  more
