Philippines Cancels Plans for Mobile Number Portability

The Philippines telecoms regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has shelved plans for mobile number portability in the market, citing high costs. Edgardo Cabarrios, NTC chief for common carriers authorization said that the number portability is too costly on the part of the subscribers based on the recommendation of the agencyĆ's technical working group.  more

Top 20 Operators in Asia-Pac: Bharti overtakes DoCoMo, India Gains Ground

The mobile markets of the Asia Pacific region continues to grow in importance. In Issue 99, we reported the fact that at the end of September, there were 20 networks in the world with more than 30m customers, of which eight were in this region. Those eight included the two largest - China Mobile and China Unicom - as well as the seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, 13th and 20th. Just three months later, there are now 23 networks that have passed the 30m mark and nine of these are now in the AsiaPac region, including four from India. Of the nine, four now have over 50m customers, the other two outside China being Bharti from India and DoCoMo from Japan. Together, the nine have a total of 831m customers, or just under 25% of the global market.  more

Telia sells paging network

Sweden's Telia Mobile is transferring its Minicall paging service to Generic Mobile Systems AB. Generic will continue to run the service as from 25 April 2002. The transfer is a part of streamlining the Swedish operations of Telia Mobile. Telia will be managing the operation of the Minicall network for a transitional period. more

Philippines interconnection row

The Philippines based Digital Telecommunications has sent an appeal to the country's telecoms regulator, complaining that the GSM networks, Smart and piltel have refused to offer interconnections with its network within the mandated 90 days. Digital Telecommunications, which operates a landline network is currently building a GSM network of its own, and expect to launch the service at the end of the year. more

Philippines to give away GSM1800 spectrum

The Philippine National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has said that it will allocated extra spectrum in the GSM1800 bands next month to the existing cellular networks. The companies will be allocated a chunk of the 30Mhz spectrum free of charge, as the regulator did not want the costs to be passed to the customer. The networks are currently paying about US$190,000 per Mhz of spectrum used. The new GSM1800 spectrum will be available in four blocks, two for the two largest networks, and two will be offered to two of the four smaller players, leaving two networks with no additional spectrum. The current GSM spectrum allocation is: Globe (15Mhz), PLDT (10Mhz), Islacom (10Mhz - merging with Globe), piltel (12.5Mhz), Bayantel (10Mhz), Digitel (5Mhz). " more

Cellular subscribers past land-line for PLDT

The Philippines based PLDT Group has announced that its cellular subscriber base has surpassed its land-line customer base for the first time. The total subscriber base has now passed 4.23 million, with 3.52 million using the cellular networks. The cellular subscriber base has jumped by 510% over the past twelve months, and operates a cellular network under the piltel and Smart brand name. " more
