Femtocell Designs "sniff" out cells: Enables Self-Organizing Wireless Networks

picochip has announced three software reference designs that provide the first integrated network listen (or 'sniffer') capabilities for femtocells. The PC8210, PC8211 and PC8810 Radio Environment Scanners (RESs) enable femtocells to detect WCDMA, GSM and TD-SCDMA networks respectively.  more

picoChip Shows Off Chinese 3G Standard Femtocell

picochip has shown off a TD-SCDMA based femtocell software reference design in China, and announced that Digimoc, a Chinese provider of femtocells, as its first publicly disclosed TD-SCDMA customer. Digimoc is using picochip's PC202 device and PHY software reference design in its femtocell product.  more

picoChip Introduces TD-SCDMA Femtocell Reference Design

picochip has launched a TD-SCDMA based femtocell reference design, the first to support this standard. The new design was developed in China at picochip's Beijing design center. With this introduction picochip now supports all three 3G standards families: WCDMA (HSPA) through the picochip PC8208/8209, cdma2000 via GWT partnership, and now TD-SCDMA with the PC8808. picochip also supports WiMAX Waves 1 and 2 with its PC6530 and PC6532 single chip reference designs respectively.  more

Femtocells Set to Challenge Wi-Fi Cellphones

Strategy Analytics has released a report which notes that low-cost femtocells could emerge as an attractive alternative to voice over Wi-Fi (VoFi) in future homes. picochip has developed inexpensive baseband processors for very low-cost femtocell base stations that can be installed in the home. These femtocells have the potential to reduce the demand for cellphones that include Wi-Fi, which many in the cellphone industry believe will emerge in high volumes over the next several years to support the convergence of fixed and mobile communications. more

picoChip Signs WiMAX Supply Contract

picochip says that it has signed a partnership agreement with Korea Telecom (KT) to develop WiBro / WiMAX access points, sometimes called Femtocells or Home-Basestations. Femtocells are small, low-cost basestations, intended to be used in residential or corporate environments where high-speed coverage would otherwise be limited. WiBro, the South Korean wireless telecommunications standard, is compatible with WiMAX 802.16e-2005 (mobile WiMAX). more

picoChip and ARM Announce Wireless Chipsets

picochip and ARM have jointly announced that picochip's next generation picoArray flexible products for WiMAX and WCDMA infrastructure will incorporate the ARM926EJ-S processor, to create the first single-chip, software-defined solution for advanced wireless systems. The new solution will enable carriers to build-out their infrastructure based on the current 802.16d WiMAX standard, and quickly upgrade their equipment to support mobility once the new 802.16e standard is complete. more
