Sony Ericsson Shows Off Two Eco-Friendly Mobile Phones

Sony Ericsson today unveiled two new "GreenHeart" products as part of its new(ish) plan to reduce the carbon emissions from its products. The first flagship product to be launched, the C901 GreenHeart, will include an electronic, in-phone manual to replace the standard paper version, saving over 90% in paper. The C901 GreenHeart phone casing is made from a minimum of 50% recycled plastics and includes an optimised display light sensor that uses less energy. The phone is coloured with waterborne paint that lowers exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).  more

Interest in Mobile Phone Recycling Surges in the UK

Internet usage tracking firm, Hitwise says that UK Internet searches related to the recycling of mobile phones have almost trebled over the last 12 months. UK Internet searches for a portfolio of mobile phone recycling search terms - such as 'recycle mobile phones', 'mobile phone recycling' and 'phone recycling' - increased by 189% between the week ending 17/05/2008 and the week ending 16/05/2009.  more

ReCellular Expands Wholesale Mobile Phone Auction Platform

Mobile phone recycling firm, ReCellular says that it is launching an expanded Web-based auction platform for wholesale customers. Every month, ReCellular's AcCELLerate auction offers an average of 250,000 second-hand handsets, and the auction will now be expanded with offerings from ReCellular's industry partners, including wireless carriers and original equipment manufacturers, which could add another 250,000 additional handsets per month.  more

Mobile Phone Recycling Secures $15 Million in Funding

Mobile phone recycling company, ReCellular says that it has raised US$15 million from the  Investor Growth Capital (IGC) to fund its expansion plans. ReCellular's revenues have increased an average of 25 percent for the past eight years, and expects to process more than 6 million phones in 2008.  more

US State Seeks to Legislate Mobile Phone Recycling

New legislation being proposed in the US State of Maine would make promote recycling of mobile phones by mandating that phone retailers have facilities for accepting back unwanted handsets. Rep. Chris Babbidge, D-Kennebunk, submitted the bill with the hope of improving cell phone recycling rates in the state, which already promotes recycling of old computers. more

Mobile Phone Recyclers are Handling Stolen Goods

An investigation has revealed that some of the UK's major mobile phone recyclers are putting their reputations and those of national charities and major retailers, at risk by handling and selling stolen goods. Phone recycling is a popular way of raising money for charity, with donations given in return for old or unused mobile phones. Recipero, who coincidentally offer a service for checking if handsets are stolen - carried out the investigation, sent handsets registered as stolen to the four biggest UK recycling companies via recycling schemes advocated in major retail outlets. more

4 Million Mobiles "on hold" For No Reason"

Results released by the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) show that public awareness of mobile phone recycling has risen with collections passing the two million handset and battery mark. Consumer awareness increased (46 to 54%), while fewer people threw their mobiles out with the rubbish, down from 9% last year to 5% in 2006. more

Battery recycling on the increase

The nonprofit Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) has reported that a total of 2,259,635 pounds of rechargeable batteries was collected in the U.S. and Canada through their Call2Recycle program during the first six months of 2005 -- an increase of 9% from the same time period in 2004. more
