Smartone - Customer Growth Improves but Remains Sluggish

Smartone is Hong Kong's smallest mobile network by customer numbers, with 11.0% market share at the end of 2008. Its total customer base reached 1.14m, up from 1.11m at the end of 2007, with proportionate growth of 2.8% in the year. This was double the 1.4% rate recorded in 2007, but it looks set to be well below the growth rate of pccw Mobile, its closest competitor. In fact, at the end of 2007 Smartone had more customers than pccw, but the positions were reversed during Q1 08.  more

Telecoms Charity Sends Aid to Congo

In an effort to support the agencies of the United Nations and non governmental organizations, a team of emergency telecommunications specialists was deployed from Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF) headquarters in France to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The team reached the city of Dungu situated near the Sudanese border in the eastern province of this central African country Sunday.  more

Huawei Demos HSPA+ in Hong Kong

Huawei has announced the successful completion of its first live demonstration of a commercially ready HSPA+ (also known as HSPA Evolution) network and device. The trial was conducted in Hong Kong with telecoms operator pccw. HuaweiÃ's E182E HSPA+ mobile broadband solution will be ready for full commercial use in the early part of 2009.  more

CDMA2000 Network Launched in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's pccw has launched a CDMA2000 mobile service, notes a statement from the telecoms regulator, OFTA - which is aimed primarily at providing roaming services for visitors to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  more

Telecoms Charity Sends Aid to Pakistani Earthquake Victims

Reacting to the 6.5 earthquake in Pakistan Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF) deployed a team of emergency telecommunications specialist on Friday. TSFÃ's team which includes a volunteer of the Asian Institute of Technology took off from its Asian base in Bangkok and landed in the capital Islamabad to be deployed to the affected Province of Balotchistan as soon as possible.  more

Vodafone Wins Landline Operator License in Qatar

The telecoms regulator in the Middle-East country of Qatar has awarded a landline operators license to a group made up of Vodafone and the Qatar Foundation Consortium. This decision breaks the monopoly on landline services currently held by Qatar Telecom (Qtel).  more
