Aircel Signs Tower Sharing Deal with BSNL

­India's Aircel has announced a 10-year passive infrastructure sharing agreement with state owned operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). Aircel, which already has around 32,000 base stations, says that it will now have access to approximately 45,000 BSNL towers across all its licensed circles.  more

100 Mln. Internet Subscribers By 2014 for India

Reliance Inks Indian Network Sharing Deal with Etisalat

India's Reliance Communications has agreed to a passive infrastructure sharing deal with greenfield operator, Etisalat DB. Under the terms of the agreements, Etisalat and its local subsidiary would outsource their telecom infrastructure requirements for the 15 telecom circles, encompassing end-to-end tower and transmission infrastructure to Reliance Infratel and Reliance Communications, respectively.  more

Idea Cellular Gets Approval for Tower Separation

India's Idea Cellular has received approval from its shareholders to split off its tower assets into a separate company, Idea Cellular Towers Infrastructure. The new company, which will manage Idea's 11,000 towers will now be merged with Indus Towers, the three-way joint venture with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar.  more

Reliance Communications Debt Ratings Affirmed at LAAA

Indian debt ratings agency, ICRA has assigned a long-term rating of LAAA each to the Rs. 30 billion Non-Convertible Debenture (NCD) Programme and the Rs. 100 billion proposed Long-Term Fund-Based Facilities of Reliance Communications (RCOM). Further, ICRA has reaffirmed the LAAA rating assigned earlier to the Rs. 201.56 billion Long-Term Fund Based/Non-Fund Based Limits of RCOM.  more

Private Equity Group Invests in Indian Mobile Operator

The private equity group, Providence Equity Partners has taken a twenty percent stake in Aditya Birla Telecom (ABTL) - a wholly-owned subsidiary of India's Idea Cellular - for US$640 million. ABTL owns the telecom mobile license for the Bihar service area and will hold a 16 per cent stake in Indus Towers, the company's tower subsidiary which is co-owned by Vodafone Essar and Bharti Airtel.  more

Indian Operator Planning $250 Million Network Expansion Spend

India's Idea Cellular says that it plans to spend Rs 1000 crore (US$250 million) expanding its network in the western state of Gujarat. Idea, part of Aditya Birla Group, operates in 11 of India's 23 telecom circles.  more

Majority of Ugandan Mobile Towers Could be Illegal

Uganda's four GSM network operators have built out the vast bulk of their networks without planning permission from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). NEMA executive director Dr. Aryamanya Mugisha has informed politicians that only 25 MTN masts were approved, 30 for Celtel, 29 Warid and one for Uganda Telecom.  more
