Smart Mobile Device Shipments Jump 53% to 118 Million in 2007
The latest market data from analyst firm Canalys shows how much the converged device market (all smart phones and wireless handhelds) has grown over the past year. These, typically high-end, devices represented around 10% of the global mobile phone market by units in 2007, with annual growth of 60% making them one of the fastest growing segments of the technology industry. Year-on-year growth climbed every quarter throughout 2007, to reach a peak of 72% in Q4. more

China's Smartphone Sales up 5.2% in Q3 2007
China's CCID Consulting says that it saw a 5.2% increase is sales in China's smart phone business in Q3 '07, compared to Q2'07. CCID Consulting released its latest data showing that the sales volume of China's smart phones reached 6.388 million sets in Q3, up 5.2% over Q2; sales revenue reached 16.61 billion Yuan, increasing 11.3% on a month-on-month basis. With students buying phones during the summer vacation and with promotions during the Chinese national holiday, the smart phone market created highs in sales volume. more

Smartphone shipments will exceed 100 million units in 2007
According to new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, global shipments of smartphones running advanced operating systems will reach 113 million units in 2007. Increasing at an average annual compound growth rate 25.6 percent, shipments are forecasted to reach 365 million units by 2012. Smartphones will then account for over 22 percent of all handsets worldwide, compared to 10 percent today. more

64 Million Smartphones Shipped Worldwide in 2006
Canalys' latest market estimates show that Nokia, RIM, Motorola and palm each held onto a place among the top five worldwide smart mobile device vendors in Q4 2006, but some positions changed. Nokia retained its lead, while RIM moved up a place into second, nudging ahead of Motorola. palm remained in fourth, while Sony Ericsson broke into fifth place for the first time since Q2 2004, thanks largely to shipments of FOMA devices in Japan. Its EMEA smart phone shipments were also considerably higher than in previous quarters thanks to the arrival of new models. more

Linux Poised to Expand Role as Mobile OS
The use of Linux as a mobile operating system (OS) has been steadily growing, with an increasing number of companies announcing plans to develop Linux platforms. Linux is uniquely positioned in the OS space with implementations in both the smartphone and feature phone segments. This is in sharp contrast to Symbian, Windows Mobile and palm which have focused on the smartphone segment. However, Linux phones still represent a small segment of the overall handset market. more
