Fractus Sues Ten Cellphone Manufacturers for Patent Infringement

Despite Recession - US Smartphone Market Still Growing
According to The NPD Group, consumer sales of smartphones to U.S. consumers represented 23 percent of all handset sales in the fourth quarter (Q4) 2008 compared to just 12 percent in Q4 2007. Led by the release of Apple's iPhone 3G at $199, the average price for a smartphone fell 23 percent from $216 in Q4 2007 to $167 last year. more

Taiwanese OEMs Switching from Ericsson to Qualcomm for 3G Phones
Taiwan's handset manufacturers are increasingly switching from the Ericsson mobile phone platform to Qualcomm's own handset platform - report local industry sources. Sources told DigiTimes that because HTC has had good success with its Qualcomm-based 3G handsets, other major handset vendors such as Motorola, LG Electronics, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and palm all intend to adopt the Qualcomm platform for their 3G products. more

These, typically high-end, devices represented around 10% of the global mobile phone market by units in 2007, with annual growth of 60% making them one of the fastest growing segments of the technology industry. HTC Sees Windows Mobile Smartphone Market Share Slump
Taiwan's High Tech Computer (HTC) is reported to have lost its top spot as the world's leading vendor of Windows Mobile based smartphones (excluding touch-screen models). According to internal data from Microsoft seen by DigiTimes, the company has dropped to third place, behind Motorola and Samsung.
