Nokia getting on top of handset media portability

Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An important addition to the core is MicrosoftĂ's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, which largely completes NokiaĂ's audio codec support. However, some gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and free, Ogg family.  more

Mobile Content Sharing Puts $16.4 Billion Worth of Revenue at Risk by 2012

Pioneer Consulting has published a new report which shows that a significant portion of multimedia content on mobile phones is either user generated or is simply being stored on the handset. This content, termed User Originated Content (UOC) is being increasingly shared with friends, family and contacts on social networks. With handsets starting to have Bluetooth, WiFi and WiMAX capabilities, end users can use alternative networks to share content, effectively bypassing the operatorĂ's mobile network and the content value chain.  more

Mobile data services – Unlocking revenue streams in Europe

Mobile data services will be the main source of revenue growth in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) over the next five years says a new report from Analysys Research. With rising mobile penetration across the region and voice ARPU levels in gradual decline, operators must turn their attention to non-voice services. Analysys forecasts that non-voice ARPU will grow from EUR1.8 in 2006 to EUR3.3 in 2012 - an annual growth rate in excess of 10%.  more

Operators Need to "Blend" Wireless and Wired Internet Services

Operators looking to profit from mobile internet must focus on enhancing existing internet applications and communities with made for mobile capabilities and multi-channel access, according to an expert panel polled by messaging company Acision last week at the Telco 2.0 conference in London.
