Will LTE be to mobile operators what NGNs are to fixed?
Opinion by Steven Hartley, senior analyst at ovum
With all the excitement surrounding LTE, it is easy to overlook how the
practicalities of migration will impact mobile operators. Migration to LTE will
need to be approached in the same way that fixed telcos have viewed
next-generation network (NGN) deployments - long term and holistically.

Broadband remains a 'sticky' service
Opinion by Michael Philpott, principal analyst at ovum
One possible scenario for the telecoms industry during the current economic
slowdown is that fixed-to-mobile substitution (FMS) will be accelerated as
consumers reduce their communications bill by cutting their fixed line in favour
of mobile services. With mobile broadband deals now more readily available and
affordable, there is a potential ¢â‚¬Ëœdouble whammy' to this in that fixed line

players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the
E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and
markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is
higher than in other regions.

Nokia getting on top of handset media portability
Opinion by Tony Cripps, principal analyst at ovum
Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the
fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the
problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An
important addition to the core is Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA)
format, which largely completes Nokia's audio codec support. However, some
gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and
free, Ogg family.
