Broadband remains a 'sticky' service

One possible scenario for the telecoms industry during the current economic slowdown is that fixed-to-mobile substitution (FMS) will be accelerated as consumers reduce their communications bill by cutting their fixed line in favour of mobile services. With mobile broadband deals now more readily available and affordable, there is a potential ¢â‚¬Ëœdouble whammy' to this in that fixed line operators could not only lose further fixed voice revenues but valuable broadband revenues as well. ovum therefore commissioned a survey of over 8,000 consumers to find out their plans.  more

Nokia kick-starts GPS market in Europe

According to a new ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost 572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is higher than in other regions.  more

Nokia getting on top of handset media portability

Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An important addition to the core is Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, which largely completes Nokia's audio codec support. However, some gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and free, Ogg family.  more
