During 2008, in a first for the mobile industry, consumer demand for third-party
applications started driving both handset sales and revenues for developers and
OEMs. Apple’s success with the App Store has prompted other players to focus
on devices that can enable third-party developers to easily bring applications
and services to mobile phones.

Nokia kick-starts GPS market in Europe

According to a new ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices
will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost
572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA
players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the
E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and
markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is
higher than in other regions.

Nokia getting on top of handset media portability

Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the
fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the
problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An
important addition to the core is MicrosoftÃ's Windows Media Audio (WMA)
format, which largely completes NokiaÃ's audio codec support. However, some
gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and
free, Ogg family.

Nokia Adds Support for Microsoft Silverlight to their Handsets
Nokia has announced plans to make Microsoft Silverlight available for S60 on Symbian OS, as well as for Series 40 devices and Nokia Internet tablets. The company says that adding support for Silverlight will extend opportunities for developers to create interactive applications that run on multiple platforms in a consistent and reliable way. more
