1Q09 results showing greater recession impact on suppliers than operators

Two weeks into the 1Q09 earnings cycle, ovum looked at results to date across a broad spectrum of industry participants to get a sense of how the recession is impacting the telecoms industry. Specifically, we looked at results for ten telecoms operators, seven equipment vendors, six component makers, and two contract manufacturers. The operators are all based in North America, whereas the revenues of the other companies represent global operations.  more

Telecoms dealmaking on hold in 4Q '08

According to a new study from ovum, global economic downturn depressed valuations and dealmaking in the telecom sector in 4Q 2008. Based on ovum's report, M&A deal count was 129 in 4Q08, from 192 in 4Q07, with only four deals valued above US$1 billion, from 10 in 4Q07.  more

The case for network sharing gets stronger

With a mature market, declining voice revenues and now the economic downturn, the argument for European mobile network operators (MNOs) to share their networks has never been stronger. Although there have been several network-sharing initiatives, what is needed is a more coherent commercial and regulatory framework across the EU to make network sharing the norm rather than the exception.  more

Telcos Planning Ahead for an Economically Troubled 2009

In September 2008, the scale of the financial market meltdown grew by orders of magnitude, and apprehension about its effect on the communications industry reached new heights. Recognizing that many companies are now setting budgets for next year and need to make assumptions on how current events will play out, ovum developed several planning scenarios that put boundaries on the uncertainties in the telecoms industry for 2009. ovum believes the most likely scenario is a generally mild impact on the telecoms industry, with growth and spending slowing but not declining. Telstra Fiscal Year Profit Up 13.5%, Keeps Long-Term Target

Anadigics Offers Power Amp for 3G Phones in the GSM900 Bands

Anadigics has announced its new AWT6281 HELP3 WCDMA Linear Power Amplifier (PA) engineered specifically for use in 3G handsets operating in the GSM900 bands. The company said that the new power amplifier extends the operating time of 3G handsets and data cards, which is critical for successful operation using today's High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) networks. AWT6281 has been specified by leading chipset manufacturers for selected reference designs.  more

No Slowdown in North Amercian Operator CAPEX in 4Q07

ovum has published its analysis of fourth-quarter 2007 revenue and capital spending by North American network operators. Fixed telecom revenues were largely flat to down among top-tier service providers, although AT&T and Bell Canada eked out small gains. Despite the poor revenue growth, wireline telecom operator capex increased by 12.4% versus the fourth quarter of 2006. Cable MSOs saw revenues increase 13.6%, while holding spending growth to just 8.6%. Mobile revenues remained on trend, growing nearly 10%, while mobile capex fell 11.4%.  more

T-Mobile and Three to Merge their 3G Radio Access Networks

Hutchison 3G UK (3) and T-Mobile UK have signed an agreement to combine their 3G access networks in a collaboration which they say will lead to almost complete population coverage for 3G services across Britain by the end of 2008 with significant fill in and improvement to dense urban in-building coverage in 2009.  more
