1Q09 results showing greater recession impact on suppliers than operators

Two weeks into the 1Q09 earnings cycle, ovum looked at results to date across a
broad spectrum of industry participants to get a sense of how the recession is
impacting the telecoms industry. Specifically, we looked at results for ten
telecoms operators, seven equipment vendors, six component makers, and two
contract manufacturers. The operators are all based in North America, whereas
the revenues of the other companies represent global operations.

Optical networking market tops $4B again in 4Q '08
ovum has published its preliminary 4Q08 and full-year 2008 results for global optical equipment networking vendors, and reports that the global optical networking (ON) market topped $4 billion for the fourth time in five quarters, increasing 4% sequentially, but was down 5% versus 4Q07. Spending for the full year was up 9% over 2007 to $16.3 billion. more

Nortel's bankruptcy filing enables radical change, and not just at Nortel

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and
speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the
US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by
Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management
regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the
telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry
structure for communications equipment.
