Nokia kick-starts GPS market in Europe
Opinion piece by Tony Cripps and Michele Mackenzie, principal analysts
According to a new ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices
will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost
572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA
players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the
E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and
markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is
higher than in other regions.

Facebook-Twitter talks break down
Opinion piece by Madan Sheina, principal analyst at ovum
What would have been the first major consolidation between two social
networking giants has failed to materialise, as FacebookÃ's attempts to woo
Twitter with an all-stock offer fell on deaf ears. FacebookÃ's valuation seems
to have been the sticking point. But with neither company as yet able to
demonstrate that it can make money on a scale that matches its number of users,
the outcome might not be a bad thing.

No sign of wireless downturn in North America yet
Independent Analyst Comment - Steven Hartley, Senior Analyst at ovum
North America was the first region to be affected by the current economic
crisis and, to date, has been the hardest hit. Although the full effects of the
downturn are yet to be felt, the wireless operatorsÃ' results in the third
quarter reflect how mobile services have become indispensable and two-year
contracts are protecting the sector in the region. Mobile telecom remains on
track to grow in the region in 2009.

Nokia getting on top of handset media portability
Opinion by Tony Cripps, principal analyst at ovum
Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the
fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the
problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An
important addition to the core is MicrosoftÃ's Windows Media Audio (WMA)
format, which largely completes NokiaÃ's audio codec support. However, some
gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and
free, Ogg family.

Open source in mobile phones: challenges for software vendors
Opinion piece by Adam Leach, principal analyst at ovum
Open source is the emerging development methodology for mobile phones,
reducing operational costs, harnessing innovation and shortening time to market
for new devices and services. With both Nokia and Google already choosing an
open source model for their mobile platforms over the past twelve months, the
pressure is on independent software vendors (ISVs) in the mobile market to adopt
an open source strategy.

Telcos Planning Ahead for an Economically Troubled 2009
In September 2008, the scale of the financial market meltdown grew by orders of magnitude, and apprehension about its effect on the communications industry reached new heights. Recognizing that many companies are now setting budgets for next year and need to make assumptions on how current events will play out, ovum developed several planning scenarios that put boundaries on the uncertainties in the telecoms industry for 2009. ovum believes the most likely scenario is a generally mild impact on the telecoms industry, with growth and spending slowing but not declining. The scenarios are described in the October edition of ovumÃ's Straight Talk Monthly communication to clients. more
