Pakistan Mobile Debt Buyback Plans Trigger Default Warning

The debt ratings agency, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services has warned that it considers Pakistan Mobile to be at risk of defaulting on a debt repayment. The mobile operator, owned by Orascom Telecom Holding recently announced plans to repurchase for cash up to US$100 million of its $250 million bonds due 2013, at a 23%-30% discount to face value.  more

MobiNil Shareholder Dispute Continues

Egypt's Orascom Telecom and France Telecom have continued their acrimonious public battle over the control of Egyptian moble network operator, MobiNil. This morning, Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH) announced that France Telecom has failed to pay the purchase price as required by the terms of the arbitral award issued by the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce and has failed to comply with its obligations under Egyptian law to make a public tender offer on the same terms as the Award.  more

Orascom Telecom Announces its Compliance with ICC Ruling

Following a legal ruling last week, Egypt's Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH) says that it has transferred shares it holds in Mobinil to France Telecom. There has been a quite public dispute between the two companies since the legal ruling, with Orascom claiming that the paperwork hadn't arrived, and France Telecom insisting that Orascom was being obdurate.  more

North Korean 3G Network Signs Up 20,000 Subscribers

It has been reported that the 3G network launched late last year in North Korea has already signed up some 20,000 subscribers. The Japan based, pro-North Korea newspaper, Choson Sinbo reported the figures noting that the customers include foreigners allowed to work in the country.  more

Court Order Gives France Telecom Control of Egypt's MobiNil

Orascom Telecom has lost a legal action and been ordered to sell its entire stake in Egypt's MobiNil to France Telecom. In 2007 Orascom Telecom initiated an arbitration against France Telecom at the Arbitration Court of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to try and force France Telecom to transfer its MobiNil shares to Orascom Telecom.  more

China Mobile Denies Seeking a Stake South Africa's MTN Group

Reports in the media that China Mobile Communications Corp. (CMCC) is seeking a partner for a takeover of South Africa's MTN Group have been denied by the firm. The reports, which first emerged in the South China Morning Post, citing unnamed sources said that the company was seeking to be a junior partner in a takeover attempt.  more

BlackBerries Arrive in Tunisia

Tunisian mobile network operator, Tunisie Telecom has announced the commercial launch of the BlackBerry solution in the country - with the system being supplied by Alcatel-Lucent. Based on its distribution agreement with RIM, Alcatel-Lucent will leverage its local presence in the region to provide Tunisie Telecom the end-to-end implementation, launch, and on-going support for delivering the BlackBerry solution to the Tunisian market.  more

New Canadian Operator Granted License and Spectrum

Canada's new entrant wireless network operator, Globalive Wireless has been officially granted its spectrum license from Industry Canada and has received the corresponding spectrum. Globalive Wireless participated in Industry Canada's AWS Spectrum Auction in May 2008, purchasing CDN$442 Million in provisional spectrum. Following a standard review period, Globalive has been granted its license, having met the eligibility requirements specified by Industry Canada to become a spectrum licensee.  more
